Q เพราะเหตุใด จึงเรียกองค์กรระหว่างประเทศว่าด้วยมาตรฐาน (International Organization for Standardization) ว่า "ISO" ไม่ใช่ "IOS"
A เพราะว่าชื่อองค์กร "International Organization for Standardization" จะเรียกต่างๆกันตามภาษา เช่นภาษาอังกฤษจะย่อว่า "IOS" ถ้าเป็นฝรั่งเศส จะย่อเป็น "OIN" (Organisation internationale de normalisation) ดังนั้น องค์กรจึงตัดสินใจให้เรียกเป็นชื่อเดียวกันว่า "ISO" ซึ่งมาจากภาษากรีก ISOS แปลว่า ความเท่าเทียมกัน นั่นเอง ด้วยเหตุนี้ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นประเทศใด ภาษาใด ก็จะเรียกชื่อย่อขององค์กรระหว่างประเทศว่าด้วยมาตรฐานเหมือนๆกันว่า ISO

ISO's name
Because "International Organization for Standardization" would have different acronyms in different languages ("IOS" in English, "OIN" in French for Organisation internationale de normalisation), its founders decided to give it also a short, all-purpose name. They chose "ISO", derived from the Greek isos, meaning "equal". Whatever the country, whatever the language, the short form of the organization's name is always ISO.
